National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: A Time for Reflection and Action
On Monday, September 30th, the Central Okanagan School District observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honoring survivors of residential schools and remembering those lost. This day is a time for reflection on Canada's history and a call to action for meaningful reconciliation.
Across the district, students from diverse backgrounds participated in meaningful discussions, art projects, and ceremonies aimed at fostering understanding of the intergenerational harm caused by past government actions. With the support of the schools and the SWIS team, students explored the Calls to Action and learned what it means to be an ally in the reconciliation process.
The unity displayed by students exemplified the district’s commitment to building inclusive and compassionate communities. Through shared learning and reflection, they took important steps toward healing and understanding.
We encourage everyone to use this day to reflect on the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and consider how to support Indigenous students and families in our community. Together, we can continue on the path toward healing and reconciliation.
